Summary[edit]

Description
English: German prisoner, during World War I. Portrait of a German prisoner wearing a helmet and, what could be, civilian clothes. The closeness of the subject forces one to look at his face.

Whilst many photographs were deliberately taken as propaganda, some, like this, provide us with a more honest account of war and the people involved. Despite the biased caption, this very real and striking portrait refuses to demonise the enemy.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE WESTERN FRONT. Type of German prisoners captured in the new push.']
