Its architecture,though old, is substantial and handsome; the upperpart of the walls is entirely covered with portraitsof former professors and rectors, amongst whomare some persons of distinguished literary merit.There is, however, another building in thissquare, about which neither Mr. Paz Soldan norDr. Fuentes writes a word, and that is the housewith the convex roof in front of the statue ofBolivar, seen in the sketch. Perhaps the memoryof it ought to be let perish, or probably I wouldhave said nothing about it if it had been, as it oughtto be, at any sacrifice, levelled to the ground.This is the present Senate House, and wasformerly the terrible Inquisition tribunal. Ivisited it one day, and was conducted throughthe greater portion by the care-takerâthe membersnot being then sitting.
