Title
Two views in plan of an Early Medieval saucer brooch.
Description
English: This is possibly an Early Medieval saucer brooch. It is made from cast copper alloy with the remains of an iron pin on the reverse. In plan it is circular, which is 45.4mm diameter. In depth it is 10.8mm. It weighs 18.10g.
The main, uncorroded component of the brooch is a circular disc of copper alloy which has a slightly concave upper surface. On the reverse there are two integral lugs to the disc. One lug is curled which presumably is the catchplate. The second lug is incomplete and has a 'n' shaped terminal, suggesting perhaps originally there was a hole here. Around this lug and twoards the catchplate there is corroded iron and iron staining suggesting the pin was originally made of iron.
It is the upper surface of the brooch which is unusual. The concave disc appears to be filled with a soft and flaking secondary portion of copper alloy which holds the decoration. It appears as if the decoration has been impressed onto the surface. Whether this happened in reality is doubtful. Only occassional irregular linear grooves are visiable of the decoration and occassional flecks of gilding. This component of the brooch does appear to sit on top of the circular disc.
If this is a cast saucer brooch it is likely to be dated to the 5th to 6th centuries.
