Summary[edit]

Description
English: Two types of sea defences. The high wooden revetment seen in the background is being reinforced by several zig-zag groynes on its landward side. These groynes were constructed with steel posts which are very corroded and look as if they won't last for much longer. For a wider view of one of these zig-zag groynes see > 1034014. Pebbles have become stuck in the gaps, deposited here by wave action, as has a length of rope. Coastal erosion in the vicinity has been estimated at an approximate rate of one metre/year, which accounts for the loss of a strip of land approximately two kilometres wide since the Roman invasion in 43 CE, resulting in the disappearance into the sea of several medieval villages.
