SALLE DES FETES OF THE HOTEL DE VILLE. PARIS OF TO-DAY 379 There have been three Expositions in Parisunder the Third Republic. Each has left behinda permanent memorial. The Palace of theTrocadero, dating from 1878, is a huge concerthall where government-trained actors and singersoften give for a strangely modest sum the sameperformances which cost more in the regulartheaters with more elaborate accessories. Thearchitecture of the Trocadero is not beautiful butthe situation is imposing and the general effectimpressive when seen across the river from thesouth bank where the Eiffel Tower has raised itshuge iron spider web since the Worlds Fair of1889. The tower is a little world in itself with arestaurant and a theater, a government weatherobservatory and a wireless station. Since avia-tion has become fashionable the frequent purr ofan engine tells the tourist sipping his tea inEnglish fashion on the first stage that yetanother aviator is taking his afternoon spin around the Tour Eiffel.
