Summary[edit]

Description

O.J. De Moll Piano Company showroom on the SW corner of Twelfth and G Streets, NW as shown in the 6/7/09 "Washington Times". It was designed by local architect B. Stanley Simmons and was new at the time of this photo.

Otto Joseph De Moll (1879-1942) opened this shop at the tail-end of nationwide craze for piano-playing and piano music. In The History of Jazz, Ted Gioia reports, "Between 1890 and 1910 ... piano production in the United States grew from under 100,000 instruments per year to over 350,000." By the time the trend peaked in 1909, there were 295 companies making pianos in the U.S., and hundreds of showrooms like this one had appeared around the country.

De Moll founded the firm in 1902 at 1231 F Street, NW, and by 1913 had moved out of the shop shown here into a new six-story building on the NW corner of Twelfth and G (700 Twelfth Street, NW, later known as the [http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/thc.5a39844 De Moll Building). The company appears to have been active into the 1950s.

Both buildings have since been demolished. O. J. De Moll is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery,]
