| Description |
English: Turnpike Cottages near Chilmark This row of four cottages lies on the north side of the B3089, about 1/2km west of the village of Chilmark. This stretch of road is referred to in addresses as Turnpike and this may originate from when the earliest road west from Salisbury was a turnpike through Dinton, Teffont, Chilmark to Shaftesbury. This road however was allowed to expire in 1788 when a new turnpike, now the route of the present A30, came into being. |
