Summary[edit]

Description

"Turning Stone," a public artwork by Pete Strecher, in front of 137 E. Main Street in Bozeman, Montana.

The six foot tall, 3,000-pound rock is mounted atop a steel pole, and can be turned with the slightest touch. The look of the stone was inspired by Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheels.

Gallatin Art Crossing is a local nonprofit organization which selects and places sustainable sculptures throughout the downtown Bozeman area. Each year, several new pieces are placed on view. At the end of the year, the public can vote for their favorite -- and this item gets named the People's Choice Award. GAC then seeks to buy the work, and install it permanently. Works which are too expensive for GAC to buy remain on display and are for sale. "Turning Stone" won the 2011 People's Choice Award.

Pete Stecher was born and raised in Germany, and moved to Bozeman in 1997. He has worked in a variety of materials, but curently specializes in stone and steel. His work often incorporates organic elements (such as flowers); traditional, vernacular artwork and patterns from around the world; and abstract designs which echo real-world visuals. His work tends to be evocative of the primitive and industrial, and often incorporates kinetic (moving, energetic) elements. Stecher participated in GAC for several years before joining the organization's board of directors in 2012 (where he oversees installation and assists with fundraising).
