This is my favourite picture of the trip and the cover shot on my book. A camel with a howdah, it is a large saddle for a camel (or elephant) that has a carriage to protect the passenger. I have never seen one before, sometimes used for weddings to hide the bride. It is a very rare site as many animal activists are against this practice. Howdahs are used mainly for tourist or commercial purposes in South East Asia. Animal rights groups and organizations, such as Millennium Elephant Foundation, openly criticize the use of the howdah, citing saying that howdahs can cause permanent damage to an elephant's spine, lungs, and other organs and can significantly shorten the animal's life. |
