26 March 2011 in Whitehall, London SWI. On the TUC March for the Alternative we pass the memorial to the contribution made by women in World War II. ________________________________________________ For me, this stands out among the public sculptures I've noticed in central London. (Often statues of important men in military uniform with big hats, sitting on horses.) John W. Mills, the sculptor, mentioned that his mother worked making munitions during World War II. The idea for the memorial came, he said: " . . . after seeing a 1940s photograph of a cloakroom at a dance hall. [ . . . ] The picture just sparked an idea in my mind which I couldn't get away from. I was interested in the concept of these women hanging up their uniforms and going back to their normal lives after the end of the war'." [<a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1493698/Womens-courage-in-Second-World-War-commemorated.html" rel="nofollow">Source</a> ] I read John Mills' comment a few years after the first time we stopped and looked at the seventeen sets of empty clothing "hanging" on the obelisk. To me the sculpture seemed to symbolise the absence of those women. Some who'd died during the war, in air raids for instance. But also sixty years later, thinking about the recent deaths of elderly women we knew personally. In wartime they'd done some of the vital jobs signified by these uniforms and work clothes.
