English: House slave on a plantation dressed as a koto misi
Nederlands: Litho. Ingekleurde litho naar Th. Bray (no. 22). De huisslavin draagt een feestelijke kotomisi. Koto betekent rok, misi betekent meisje, vrouw. De dracht bestaat oorspronkelijk uit een rok, een jasje (jaki) en een hoofddoek (angisa) en is later uitgebreid.
In de slaventijd communiceerde men met elkaar via de dracht. Met name de angisa was dan belangrijk; middels de vorm van de hoofddoek, de wijze waarop hij gevouwen was, konden boodschappen worden uitgewisseld. Ook kon aan de kleding de godsdienst van de meester, en dus ook van de slaaf, worden afgelezen. Over het ontstaan van de kotomisi bestaan meerdere verhalen. Ze werd bedacht door de Europeanen, uit kuisheid. In ieder geval is het een in Suriname ontstane klederdracht die tot op de dag van vandaag bij bijzondere gelegenheden gedragen wordt (Henar-Hewitt:10).. Huisslavin in feestelijke kotomisi |
