Roder worked early and late,with the help of one or two interpreters, recordinginteresting data regarding Islam in Bornu. On the5th of April we were sitting in the garden listeningto our gramophone, when a rider brought the newsthat Mai-Omar had been deposed, and that no seriousresistance had been offered. So we might expectvon Raben and von Duisburg to return shortly. Twodays later Roder and I both fell ill with ptomainepoisoning, and for a few days were quite hors decombat. However, we recovered sufficiently to beable to ride out to meet von Raben on his return withhis troops. We were glad to get letters from home,but unfortunately they brought to Roder the sadnews of his mothers death, which had taken placesix months previously. The following morning vonRaben started at four oclock on the march to Kusseriwhere Mai-Omar was to spend the rest of his life inexile. I
