Summary
[edit]DescriptionTring Cutting , View northwestwards - geograph.org.uk - 1274201.jpg |
English: Tring Cutting : View northwestwards Taken from the railway bridge on Marshcroft Lane on the outskirts of Tring. Tring Cutting is one of the deepest in Britain and when it was excavated in the 1830s it was considered one of the modern "Wonders of the World". It is about 2½ miles long with an average depth of about 40' (12m). This line was the first railway to be built into London and terminated, as it does now, at Euston Station, though in this photo we are viewing "down" the line, i.e. away from London as it heads off for Rugby and stations North. This line is now part of the West Coast Main Line. To see the view towards London see 1274203.
For views of the bridge from which this was taken, see 1274208 & 1274211 Interesting information about the cutting and a lithograph of its construction at http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?image=10302327 |
