July of 1864, he wasin command of all troops from Long Bridge to Chain Bridge in thedefences of Washington. His military service throughout wasmarked by a degree of intelligence, earnestness, devotion, and con-sideration for his command, which from the first challenged the ad-miration and confidence of superiors and subordinates. On March13, 1865, he was commissioned by the President Brigadier-Generalby brevet, for meritorious service in the field. The reports of thesecond battle of Bull Run made special mention of Colonel Leesefficiency in command. His regiment had been sent to an advancedposition of great peril, and during the fight a rebel force made a flankmovement, forming a line at right angles with the Union lines, makingnecessary a change of front by Colonel Lee, whose command wasalready largely disorganized by being compelled to fall back to themain fine from the advanced position to which he had been assigned.Regardless of company organization, which was lost, and under the
