July of 1864, he wasin command of all troops from Long Bridge to Chain Bridge in thedefences of Washington. His military service throughout wasmarked by a degree of intelligence, earnestness, devotion, and con-sideration for his command, which from the first challenged the ad-miration and confidence of superiors and subordinates. On March13, 1865, he was commissioned by the President Brigadier-Generalby brevet, for meritorious service in the field. The reports of thesecond battle of Bull Run made special mention of Colonel Leesefficiency in command.
