The river was searched for two or three days,and on the morning of the 28th of December Ifound a watch and shirt pin at Cloisterham Weir,two miles above the cathedral. Q. What then happened? A. I then took Neville Landless, and the jewelry,and took him immediately to Mayor Sapsea. Q. And who identified those articles ? A. John Jasper identified them as the propertyof his nephew, Edwin Drood. Q. And what was done after this, so far as Nev-ille was concerned? A. Neville was detained, and redetained, and laterdischarged for lack of evidence. 66

And what, in substance, was in that para-graph ? A. It was something like this: My dear boy ismurdered. The discovery of his watch and shirt pinconvinces me that he was murdered on that night,and that his jewelry was removed from him to pre-vent his identification by its means. All the delu-sive hopes I had founded on his separation from hisbetrothed wife, I give to the winds. They perishbefore this fatal discovery.
