Having shown the appropriatemethod of arranging the size of thematerial for strength longitudinally, and in part diagonally, we may find itto our advantage to inquire what canbe done to strengthen the ships frame, and, as a consequence, the whole fabricvertically. We have already shownthat the ship is but single-timbered inthe direction of the diagonals, and bywhich the length of the timbers are de-termined, while from that point to thenext butt, the ship is double-timbered;and this arrangement is continuedthroughout the entire ship. It will require but a glance at thissubject by the thinking-man to enablehim to discover that the plank runsnearly in the direction of the diagonalsoutside and often inside of the ship ;hence it must be equally apparent, thatat every range of butts the strength ofthe ship is less than it might be withthe same material, were it but everythird or fourth frame that displayed arange of butts: in the same directionand at the same place that a seam inthe outside and inside plank is shown, itwould be deemed of less consequence, but this range of butts is found onevery frame at the same place. It istrue that measures are sometimesadopted to bring the butts of the top-sides under the hanging knee, or in aposition in which they are supportedby other means than that furnished bythe plank; but below the decks andhanin knees
