between the various Chineseand Tibetan frontier authorities, the British representativeacting as middleman, and arrangements were eventually con-cluded providing for a general cessation of hostilities, andthe mutual withdrawal of the troops of both sides out oftouch with one another. The provisional boundary betweenSzechuan and Tibet resulting from these frontier negotiationschanced to coincide to a considerable extent with the oldseventeenth century line of the Manchus, the Chinese re-maining in control of Batang, Litang, Nyarong, Kanze and thecountry to the east of those States, while the Tibetans retainedChamdo, Draya, Markam and De-ge, and the country furtherwest. By the end of 1918 the frontier regions had settleddown after the conclusion of the truce, the trade routes hadbeen reopened, and peaceful relations generally had oncemore been resumed between China and Tibet^.
