We did not, however, get there till eleventhe next morning, having to pass the night at the foot ofa tree, where we lighted a fire. I waited at once uponthe mandarin, who is governor of the district, and hereceived me very well, in spite of the small value of thepresents I made him, and immediately gave orders forwaggons to be made ready for me.
