ch crosses the city leaves behind it ruinedhouses and people buried beneath them. During ourstay several such accidents occurred, but excited noremark. It is in the commencement of winter, with itsrains and stormy weather, that most of these casualtiesoccur, not a day passing without its tale of disaster.Probably few towns in any country present such adeath-list from the falling in of houses. Outside the business quarter there is almost nothingto attract the traveller. There are a few mosques, butmost of these are so buried up that nothing but a bitof the minaret and the open door can be seen. Thelittle one does get glimpses of is tempting enough, andsiu>*irests a rare treat if one were but permitted to strollinside and enjoy the subdued lights and cool temperatureof the sacred building while revelling in the examina-tion of its artistic features. One or two of these mosques are of considerableantiquity, and doubtless preserve specimens of theearlier and better genius of the Moors.

A. MARAKSH. 353 That of the Kutubia shows nothing in its greatbarrack-like buiklings to call for description. Thetower is the only one of its kind built of stone inMaraksh. It is square in form, with some handsomelycarved and moulded windows, while its sides are cutin relief in effective fretwork, and further adorned withbands of geometrically arranged tiles in green andblack. A small lantern surmounts the tower, bearinsrthree gilt globes, which threaten to topple over. Thelantern is reached by a winding plane, there being nosteps. From whatever point of view the Kutubia is ob-served, it dominates the town in a most striking andimpressive fashion, and neither in town or plain canone escape from it. Unlike all the others, too, it standsalone, surrounded by open squares and fine gardens,which throw its architectural features into full relief,and add to its impressive beauty by an effective framingof trees.
