Iniif t- ttn-iri. t.iun<.-jlrr K, TRAVELS IK PERSIA, BABYLONIA, My retrograde movement from Shiraz to Ispahan, which Iundertook so unwillingly, was not without the interest of passingover some new ground. I had travelled from the once splendidcapital of Irak, to that of Fars, by what is called the eastern orwinter road ; which leads through Mourg-Aub, the ancient Pasar-gadae. The route by which I was to return, is the most directto Ispahan, and lies rather west of Persepolis; being impracticablein winter, it has the name of the summer road. The summerwas indeed with us in all its consuming splendour ; and to gain acooler climate on the north of the mountains, we thought sodesirable a change, that as soon as Dr. Sharpe pronounced myselfand the convalescents of my party in strength sufficient to move,we lost no time in remarshalling our ranks ; the heads of whichwere, the Mehmandar, Sedak Beg, my worthy physician, and hismost grateful pat
