veliest imagin-ation could mistake it foi the image of a woman, and the workof an artist enamoured of his subject. It is even rudely hewn,and so colossally proportioned, that no doubt can remain, whenseen thus wholly exposed, that it was intended to be viewed froma great distance, and that its original situation must have beensome neighbouring height, whence it probably fell into thestream where the Abbe saw it. One hand is placed on thebreast, the other rests on something resembling a sword sus-pended in front of the body. The figure is broken off from theknees downwards, but from the waist to that point hang theremains of drapery. During ray rambles near the spot, I ob-served a place, where I think it is likely the statue may haveorio-inally stood; namely, a levelled ledge of rock immediatelyover the two great arches before mentioned, and along which arange of sculptured feet, broken off at the ankles, are yet perfectlydistinguishable. Falling into the river, it escaped the entire demo-lition of its companions ; and, after discoveiy by the inhabitants,who, it is likely, associating its situation with the tradition re-specting some aquatic representation of their admired queen, setit erect in the stream, it was adored as her image when the Abbesaw a glimpse of it through the water, and was told the storyof her past perfections. The natives hold the figure I saw, insuch superstitious reverence, as to believe its touch capable ofhealing the most malignant diseases in man and beast; and ingratitude, they hang its neck with a variety of votive offerings, inthe shape of rags, and other et-ceteras, of every material and co-lour, either to bribe or to repay the deified Shirene!
