. Formerly this Oriental City had twenty-eightgates, and many towers of defense, now mostlyfallen, and they are overgrown with shrubs, trees andoccasional flowers. Constantinople occupies a trian-gular promontory, washed on the north side by theGolden Horn, and on the south by the Sea ofMarmora, while on the west triple, castellated wallsof Constantinople, fourteen miles in length, connectthe golden inlet, and the Sea. Extensive and beautiful views of Constantinopleand varied waters are had from Galata Tower. Anamphitheatre of cities is spread out before us. Atour feet lies Galata, the largest suburb. The busi-ness quarter is a long street parallel with theGolden Horn. Here much business is done withthe European nations. Pera, beyond, crowns thesummit above Galata. Here-are the headquartersof diplomacy, the homes of the English and GermanEmbassadors especially, which are elaborate affairs.Bridges of boats connect the shores of the GoldenHorn whose banks are lined with masses of wooden

TRAVELS. 217 houses. These bridges are crowded with soldiers, dervishes, mules laden with barrels and boxes, andpeople of all nationalities. Lovely bits of color arediscernible everywhere on the streets and bridges. The shores of the Golden Horn afford desirablequarters for the better class of residences. Theform of this land-locked harbor suggests its name.It is a deep Inlet, half a mile wide at its mouth, andgradually curves north like a horn of plenty, to thesweet waters. The harbor is deep enough for thelargest warships, and will float 1,500 vessels. The cemetery of Eyoob Is at the upper end ofthe Golden Horn, and takes its name from thestandard bearer of Mohammed, who is buried here. Some of the tomb-houses of the Royal families areenclosed by mother-of-pearl railings. A turban, orfez, Is seen on the monuments of men ; a palmbranch on those of women. Cypresses abound In allTurkish cemeteries, as It was formerly the customto plant a tree at the birth, and another at the deathof each
