A frontier cottage built under a volcanic ledgeoverlooking Spokane Falls, in eastern Washington,before the terrible fire of the summer of 1889, in-vites you to enter. At the left a Japanese parasolshields dainty maidens from scorching rays of mid-day sun. The owner is a prosperous banker, whobuilt this structure for a barn. With few artisticmodifications the economical cashier concludes thatthe barn is quite good enough for his contentedfamily. The outlook is superb over a vast extent ofpine-clad hills, and mountains rich with minerals. Inthe foreground is Spokane Falls, a city of 25,000,and a water power larger than that which has /nadeMinneapolis so successful. The river divided byislands into three distinct streams, pours its floodover a chasm 65 feet high, into a common basin,representing a force of 216,000 horsepower ; that ofSt. Anthony Falls is only 135,000.
