TRAVELS, 147 The eagle, lord of land and sea,Will stoop to pay her fealty. It is less than nine miles from Liverpool to theEnglish Lake District. Windermere Village is amile or two back from the Lake and on elevatedground. Peeping out of the woods on every handare pretty cottages and mansions. Orrest Headcommands an extended view of Windermere Lake,with its wooded islands, pretty bays, and undulat-ing hills. Li the distance are seen many villagesand wild peaks. Few spots in England have richerand more varied scenery. From Bowness, a lakeport near by, steam yachts and pleasure boats takeyou down the lake to Newby Bridge. Its SwanInn was praised by Hawthorne. Tourists walknine miles, or sail to Ambleside, another favoritecenter of excursionists. One finds in the EnglishLake District a labyrinth of delightful trips.
