INDIAN DOMESTIC HABITS. 239 stood in front of their huts, and looking in the direc-tion of the sound of the bell, recited the Ave Maria.This is one of the religious customs taught by theSpanish friars that retains its influence upon theinhabitants of these remote highlands. Darkness rapidly succeeds daylight in tropicallatitudes, and u))on my return to the rancho I ob-served that the hut was lighted by a method men-tioned by the early historians of the conquest ashaving been in universal use amongst the MexicanIndians. In the centre of the room was a rudewooden stand, upon wdiich was placed crosswise, alighted piece of resinous pinewood. The flame gavea sufficient light for all practical purposes. Afterturning into my hammock, I watched by the fitfulglare of the firebrand, the domestic habits of theIndians.
