The Golden City passing the Seal Rocks. We at first steered a course near the shore, butfinding that there was a heavy ground swell,we kept about four miles out from the land, a dis-tance sufficiently close to enable us to have a goodview of the Californian hills. One night, large beaconfires were reported to be observed on the heights ofthe southern extremity of Lower California. Thecourse was consequently altered towards a small baywithin Cape San Lucas, and a boat came alongsideconveying passengers. It was very dark and the o 178 MANZANILLO. signal fires threw a fitful glare upon the sea and ourship, at intervals. As we followed the line of thecoast, the scenery became very grand as we ap-proached the mountain ranges of Mexico. Theweather was fine, the sea,rightly called Pacific, was assmooth as glass, and there was an effect of atmos-phere which gave a marvellously beautiful colouringto the slopes and valleys of the mountains.
