THE NEVSKY PROSPECT about the busy Bazar. The people seen in carriages or onthe sidewalks are not, at first glance, particularly unlike thecitizens of any other European capital. Were it not for thefat coachmen, the militar)^ caps and insistent Russian signs,we might be at a loss to tell our whereabouts. But the Rus-sian alphabet, like the Russian policeman, is everywhere inevidence, telling you in words you cannot understand that you 58 ST. PETERSBURG are a stranger in the land. Some one whose eyes and mindhad been thrown out of focus by these exasperating Slaviccharacters, dubbed the Russian alphabet an A B C inspasms. No wonder that shopkeepers feel compelled toput out signs in picture-language, that may be understoodby the people not fully initiated mto alphabetic mysteries.At every step the observant traveler notes a curious illus-tration of the Russian way of doing things.
