Summary[edit]
DescriptionTramway Bridge over the Allt Leachdach - geograph.org.uk - 748973.jpg |
English: Tramway Bridge over the Allt Leachdach The tramway or 'Puggie Line' once ran all the way from Loch Treig to the Fort William Aluminium Smelter - eleven miles in total.
Sadly, so I have heard, the landowner's answer to proposals to make the line a safe traffic-free cycleway was to put the bridges beyond use, hence the sad state of the one in the 'photo. I hope I am wrong and it was done out of concerns for safety! Nevertheless, part of the Leanachan cycleway still follows the route of the 'Puggie Line' and my OS Landranger map, sheet 41, revised 1974 and reprinted 1991, shows the line still intact and crossing of the line and the track heading for the Lairig Leacach, at GR NN 256 788 as 'LC' or level crossing. As a matter of interest, mountain rescue teams once used the Puggie line to evacuate casualties the surrounding hills! |
