At the Semliki ferry on the second days march wewere delayed for nearly a couple of hours in gettingthe caravan across in two dug-outs, which maderepeated journeys, taking three or four across at atime for some of the loads. The swiftness of thestream, running at over three miles an hour, made thesteering of the canoes wdth the long punting-poles amatter of some dexterity. OF THE CONGO STATE 153 could stand, came drifting down. They had beenhunting hippos for a feast. Just previously two greatheads had emerged from the water for a look round,but they were now nowhere visible and we saw themno more. On a later occasion we had an exciting time gettingthe cattle across, three crocodiles making a mostdetermined attempt upon them, and returning hungrilyagain and again to the charge, in spite of all thesplashing and shaking of sticks by our men. Whilst walking along the bank in the evening withthe chief we came in for a sudden startler from one ofthese great beasts, which unexpectedly dropped with asplash into the water from the shore, just three or fouryards away from us. Crocodiles have some uncannyways about them, which warn one to be on the alertwhen travelling near their haunts. Though infestingstreams, and delighting in resting with just the uppersurface of their snout and their elevated eye-socketsabove water, they cannot always so enjoy themselves ;so
