Title
Trajan mint of Antioch bucranium countermark
Description
English: Copper alloy as, probably of Trajan (AD 98-117) (Reece Period 5), reverse illegible. This coin was struck at Antioch (in ancient Syria, modern Turkey). see BMC III, p. 233, no. 1098. There is a bucranium (bull's head) countermark to the left of the head. These coins from Antioch with a bucranium countermark have been found in Britain, for example at Bath (Walker, Coins from the Sacred Spring at Bath, plate XXX, no. 13), Richborough (BM 1937 0212 119) and in Northants (PAS NARC-B683C2). However, at 4.9g, this coin is quite light (the Richborough coin is 7.75g). Furthermore, the portrait might be that of Hadrian, although coins of this type are not recorded for Hadrian at Antioch.
