Summary[edit]

Description This is the winter of 1908 and the construction company, John Mowlem & Co. Ltd have just sunk a shaft sixty feet under the northside of Trafalgar Square. The hoarding surrounding the shaft can be seen in the carriageway outside the National Gallery. These works were part of the northern low level sewer which was being dug, using the Greathead shield system, from Hammersmith to Bow a total length of twelve miles. This particular section was from Belgrave Square to Stepney, a distance of five miles. Shafts were also sunk in the Strand, Cheapside, Commercial Road and Stepney. The London County Council had decided on a new northern sewer because of the increase in the population of London and the additional rainfall run off caused by the building of more streets on the outskirts of London.
