Looking NW (downstream) from Portland Canal near foot of 11th St.
This part of the river, at the upriver end of the canal, is dredged every few years or so in order to maintain a year-round minimum depth of 9 feet in the navigation channel.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for this work, and Luhr Bros. is the contractor.

The cutterhead (cutter-suction) dredge Bill Holman (right distance) uses two guy wires to swing back and forth.
The anchors attached to these wires must be moved periodically as the dredge moves forward, and the two workboats Lenard (left) and Buddy are fitted with sheerlegs for this purpose.
The Lenard is preparing to raise and move one of the anchors.
The floating drum in front of Lenard serves as a buoy to mark the location of the anchor.
