Summary[edit]
DescriptionTitan's Energy Budget.svg |
English: Energy flows on Titan lead to a greenhouse effect and an anti-greenhouse effect.
Both the stratosphere and the troposphere strongly absorb shortwave sunlight. The stratosphere is mostly transparent to longwave thermal radiation, while the troposphere is optically thick for thermal radiation. In the troposphere, the tropopause is cooler than the surface, with the effective radiative emission temperatures being 21 K different; this the conventional greenhouse effect. The stratosphere has low emissivity, so must heat up to a maximum of 170 K in order to emit enough thermal radiation to balance the heat influx from absorbed sunlight. The top of the stratosphere is warmer than the bottom. The change in the effective radiative emission temperature across the stratosphere is 9 K; this is referred to as an anti-greenhouse effect.
