The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Tibetan Plateau on April 5.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Tibetan Plateau has been called the “Roof of the World” for its high altitude and has also earned the nickname of “Land of the Snows” due to the possibility that snow may fall in any month of the year. The region is also the source of most of Asia’s major rivers, including the Indus, Brahmaputra, Ganges, Mekong, and Yellow Rivers, and the broad region holds a constellation of more than 1,500 small and large lakes home to more than 1,500 large and small lakes. Due to difference in depth, sediments, salinity, and microscopic organisms found in the various lakes, they present various colors when viewed from space.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Tibetan Plateau on April 5.

The early spring scene suggests cold but warming temperatures as most of the lakes still carry winter’s ice covering. Many of the still-frozen lakes show small areas of blue or green, indicating open water. A few lakes appear ice-free.
