| Description |
English: A wood-framed kiosk with a trail map and visitor information stands at the beginning of the trail to Thunder Rocks at Allegany State Park, New York, as seen in September 2021. One of several "rock cities" that populate southern Cattaraugus County and adjacent areas of northwestern Pennsylvania, Thunder Rocks is a collection of large boulders that owes its existence to the frost wedging and erosion of sedimentary deposits that flowed westward from the Catskill Mountains roughly 360 million years ago, when the land that's now New York State was a shallow tropical sea. Much later, Thunder Rocks' location in the Salamanca Re-entrant, one of the few areas of the state not to have been touched by glaciation during the last Ice Age, preserved the landscape for our enjoyment today. |
