The professor can be seen in the right foreground, wearing a derby hat, standing next to a student looking through what appears to be a theodolite mounted on a tripod. The student can be seen looking through an eyepiece on the theodolite towards a second student at far left, who can be seen holding a long measuring stick in front of the Fremont Hotel, which can be seen in the background. A third student can be seen standing, center, holding a large piece of paper.
