Summary[edit]
DescriptionThoor Ballylee - Home of W B Yeats - geograph.org.uk - 1612856.jpg |
English: Thoor Ballylee - Home of W B Yeats This is a 16th century Norman castle that consisted of 4 floors (one room with a window on each floor overlooking a river that flowed alongside the castle). The floors & rooms were connected by a spiral staircase built into the 7ft thickness of the massive outer wall. The roof was flat and was accessed by a steep flight of stairs from the floor below. W B Yeats purchased and restored this tower castle and his wife & daughter moved in the summer of 1919. The castle fell into disuse after the Yeats family moved out in 1929. In 1965, it was restored as "Yeats Tower" and utilized as a museum. |
