Summary[edit]

Description
English: Thomas Thetcher's headstone This headstone is to the west of the cathedral (the west entrance can just be seen to the right). Thomas Thetcher was a Grenadier in the North Regiment of the Hants Militia who died of a violent fever contracted when drinking small beer in 1764. The implication is that small (weak) beer was not strong enough to kill the infections in the water, and that he should have drunk stronger stuff.

"An honest Soldier never is forgot, whether he die by Musket or by Pot".

This headstone has been kept up by his comrades and has been replaced three times, most recently by the Royal Hampshire Regiment in 1966.
