To the anmial exbibitions of theArtists Fund Society, of which be was elected the president in 1875, Mr.Hicks has contributed a number of striking genre and figure pieces ; for exam-ple, A Pennsylvania Kitchen, The Vacant Chair, The Garden-Gate, Autumn Leaves, Brittany Flower-Gb-1, Reading George Eliot, TheMorning Prayer, and No Place like Home, which is engraved to accompanythis sketch, and tells a clear and pleasing story. In his pleasant studio in AstorPlace, New York, which be has occupied for more than twenty years, is a life-size portrait of Edwin Booth as Iago, full of deviltry, fire, and force. Mr.Hicks strives to reproduce the character of a sitter in its highest and truestcondition, to become in sympathy with the best phase of the sitter, and totranscribe it. The railroad disaster at Norwalk, Connecticut, in May, 181very nearly proved fatal to him. He and his friend were two out of tour per-sons saved from a car containing forty passengers. The portrait of General Meade is undoubtedly the finest piece of charac-terization that the artist ever set his name against; rich and solid in color andin sentiment, and managed so as to make an impressive war-picture. Thecommander of the Army of the Potomac is standing on the crest of a hill, onthe slope of which his soldiers have spread their tents, while far behind themin the sunshine stretches the gleaming plain.
