. Womenhave the same suffrage rights as men, and havevoted since 1902. New South Wales was discovered and namedin 1770 by Captain Cook. The first settlementin Australia was the penal colony establishedat Botany Bay in 1788. Convict immigrationceased in 1840, and three years later representa-tive government was established. The rathervague limits of the colony were changed withthe erection of Victoria as a separate colony in1850 and the separation of Queensland in 1859.The discovery of gold in 1851 caused a rapidgrowth in population and prosperity. IeWSPAPER, a periodical publicationdevoted to the circulation of news. The nameis now generally applied only to those periodic-als which appear daily, or, at the most, weekly.Many weekly periodicals, however, are groupedwith those which are issued at longer intervalsas magazines. The modern newspaper is a powerful molderof public opinion, and in many ways the manwho controls its policy takes the place of theorator of former times. Editors like JohnDelane of the London Times, Horace Greeleyof the New York Tribune, Charles A. Dana ofthe New York Sun, to name only three out-standing men, exercised an influence which was scarcely second to that of the greatest states-men of their day. Through the newspaper theeditor reaches thousands of people who wouldbe beyond reach of his voice. As a molder of public opinion the modernnewspaper deals with every subject from thebest way to make bread to the proper way torun the business of a nation.
