an area of 151,789square miles and a population of 200,000, occu-pies the western portion of the island and is apart of the East Indian outpost province ofTernate (see East Indies, Dutch). Conspicuous among the animals of NewGuinea are the many gayly-colored birds, espe-cially the brilliant birds of paradise (whichsee). The soil is fertile, and agriculture is re-ceiving considerable attention in the Britishterritory. At the outbreak of the great warover 20,000 acres in that section were plantedto cocoanuts, 6,606 acres to rubber, 3,110 tosisal hemp, and smaller areas to coffee, cotton,vanilla, cocoa, tea, tobacco and other tropicalplants. Gold is mined here in considerablequantities, and copper fields are beginning tobe developed. There is regular steamship serv-ice between Sydney and Port Moresby, anda wireless telegraph station is maintainedat the latter port. Schools have been es-tablished under the auspices of Christianmissions both in British New Guinea andin Kaiser-Wilhelmsland.

Size and Location. Having an area of 9,341square miles, of which 311 square miles arewater surface. New Hampshire ranks fortieth in size among the states. Its area is aboutequal to one-third of that of New Brunswickand one-sixth of the state of New York. Cutoff from the sea by Maine as far south asPortsmouth Harbor, and by Massachusetts onthe southeast, the state has onl)^ eighteen milesof seacoast, which is less than that of any ofthe other Atlantic states. In shape New Hamp-shire resembles a right triangle, with its slopingside on the west following the ConnecticutRiver, which separates it from Vermont. Theright angle is broken by Massachusetts.
