Colonies were also made by theNorsemen in the Orkneys, the Hebrides, theFaroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland, andthere is a tradition that the Viking Leif Eric-son visited the coast of New England in theeleventh century, over four centuries before thefirst voyage of Columbus to the New World. It is supposed that the Northmen were in-cited to leave their homes in Scandinavia be-cause there was insufficient food to support theincreasing population. Their natural love ofadventure, typical of the imaginative peoplesof the North countries, was perhaps no lesspowerful as an inciting cause. (See illustrationon next page.) NORTHROP, Cyrus (1834- ). an Ameri-can educator and university president, born atRidgefield, Conn., and educated at Yale Col-lege. He was graduated at the Yale Law School,in 1860 was admitted to the bar and the nextyear was made clerk of the Connecticut houseof representatives; in 1862 he held the similaroffice in the state senate. After serving for atime as editor of the New Haven Palladium hebecame, in 1863, professor of rhetoric and Eng-lish literature at Yale College and remained inthat position twenty-one years. From 1884 to1911, a period of twenty-seven years, he waspresident of the University of Minnesota, be-coming in the latter year president emeritus.During his administration the university wasbrought into closer relations with the schoolsystem of the state and its usefulness to Min-nesota greatly extended.
