ected with the flag wehave to relate, occurred on the 2d of August, 1777, whenLieuts. Bird and Brant invested Fort Stanwix, or Schuyler, then commanded by Col. Peter Gansevoort. The garrisonwas without a flag when the enemy appeared, but their prideand ingenuity soon supplied one in conformity to the patternjust adopted by the Continental Congress. Shirts were cutup to form the white stripes, bits of scarlet cloth were joinedfor the red, and the blue ground for stars was composed of acloth cloak belonging to Captain Abraham Swartwout ofDutchess County, who was then in the fort. Before sunsetthe curious mosaic-work standard, as precious to the be-leaguered garrison as the most beautiful wrought flag of silkand needle work, was floating over one of the bastions. Thesiege was raised on the 2 2d of August, but we are not toldwhat became of the improvised flag.
