ameheight as the top of the chair backs with a paperedwall between. Still another device to carry the wood-work high on dining room walls of the presentday is to adopt the paneled wainscot so often exe-cuted in hardwood and equally if not more effectivewhen of softwood painted white. Preferably fiveor six feet high, this may be surmounted by a platerail or only a heavy molding as preferred. When accompanying a dado, the cornice may prop-erly be of more distinctive character, with a prom-inent denticulated molding replacing the corona, as inthe hall at Oak Hill and in several rooms at Number202J Essex Street, or considerably elaborated byhand carving after the Adam manner, as in the morn-ing room at Oak Hill. There the Grecian fretreappears supplemented by a broad frieze beneath, consisting of a continuous band of vertical reedings. In the drawing-room of the same house reeded groupsalternate with circular medallions set in square plainsections of the frieze to form a richer effect.
