The falls may be seen from the town, and exhibit a romantic appear-ance. The river is divided by a fine island, which adds to the beautyof the scene. In high stages of water, the falls almost entirely disap-pear ; but when the water is low, the whole width of the river, whichis here nearly a mile wide, has the appearance of a great many brokenrivers of foam, making their way over the falls. A canal connects Louisville with Shippingport; which removesthe barrier to navigation, created by the falls. This canal is a workof stupendous labor.
