The streets of the city occupy the whole of the first bank, called the Bottom, and extend back upon the second bank, called • theHill.* The second bank is elevated fifty o-r sixty feet above thefirst; but the Streets have been so graded as to form a smooth andgentle ascent, and to render the communication between the twoparts continuous and easy. In consequence of the descending angleef the streets, all the stagnant waters are carried off: the streets arewashed clean by the rains, and are rendered dry, clean and healthy.The city is amply supplied with water from the Ohio, by steampower. The water works, which afford this supply, belong to the ;city, which cenvey it to every family who wish it, for a stipulated isum.
