to a false point on the left,then cross over to the right, above the head of Yellow Bank islands.The first island lies close in shore, at the right hand point, when youare opposite its head, incline over to the left shore, then in to themiddle of the river, down past the head of the second island, (whichlies immediately below the foot of the upper island,) then in to theleft shore below the steam mill on the left bank ; you must keep themiddle of the river above the mill to avoid rocks that put off from theleft shore. OWENSBOROUGH, left side. This is the seat of justice of Davies county. On leaving Owens-oorough you run off for the right hand point to avoid a bar in the bendjust below the town ; when you pass the point, go over towards thecoal banks on the left, then wear off for the middle opposite the head of Little Hurricane Island, left side. Channel to the right and within 150 yards of the right shore from thewhite house (below the head of the island on the opposite side) unid 18

MAP NO. le.—OHIO RIVER. 61 you get one mile below the foot, keeping away from a point of slaterocks shelving out from the bank opposite the foot of the island. Whenyou are about a mile below these rocks you will see some coal banksen your right, under the highest tree that you can see, when oppositeto it, go over to the left shore at the foot of a small clearing, keepdown the left shore near three quarters of a mile, then go out towardsthe island. French Islands. Channel to the left of both. The large one lies near the right shore ;•the small one lies opposite the large one, in the middle of the river ;when you are at the foot of the small island, go in near the left shore^.keep down that shore about three quarters of a mile, then let go yourmud hook. Take a skiff and go and sound between these dams atthe foot of French islands. Here you have a rock dam putting offfrom the left shore quartering down and near two thirds across theriver. Another dam runs on your right from the foot
