Tygers Creek, left side PORTSMOUTH, right side. Portsmouth, the chief town of Scioto county, stands on the Ohioshore, just above the mouth of the Scioto river. The Ohio canal hereenters the river. This canal unites the waters of the Ohio with LakeErie; and by means of the Lake and the grand New York canal, awater communication is opened between the Mississippi and its tribu-taries, and the city of New York. The waters of the Mississippi, theWisconsin, the Illinois, the Missouri, with all its navigable tributa-•ies; the Arkansas, Red River, the Ohio, the Tennessee, the Cumber-land, the Wabash, the Kentucky, the Miami, the Scioto, the Ken-hawa, the Alleghany, and the Monongahela, all great and navigablerivets, with many others of less note, may be made to communicate 324i 10 334^ 10 343^ 35313551 360J Storm a Cr.

S —OHIO RIVP)R. 33 with this canal, forming an inland navigation of above 8,000 miles !!The trade and productions of the immense country watered by theserivers, extending from the Alleghany to the Rocky Mountains, andfrom the lakes to the Gulf of Mexico,—floating from different direc-tions, and even from different climates,—can all concentrate at themouth of the Ohio canal at Portsmouth. And much of it undoubtedlywill. A vast amount of commission business must, in consequence,be done here. It is also well situated for the internal commerce ofthe state. Its growth must be rapid, to keep pace with the businesswhich must naturally accumulate here. It has now a bank, courthouse, printing office, and the usual number of public buildings,stores, and mechanics shops, for towns of the size. It probably con-tains above 4000 inhabitants.
