The electrical energy is generated as three-phase alternating cur-rent of 7,500 volts, stepped down and transformed to direct current 1 here arc four L500-kw. units for normal demands and in addi-tion there is a fifth unit of 750 kw. The four main engines weresupplied by Yates & Thoni, as were the boilers. They are of thehorizontal cross compound type and the normal load of each is May jc. 1904.1 STREET RAIl.WAN Kl-AIEW. 323 2.IJ0 h. p. with a steam pressure of 160 lb. per sq. in., but they aredesigned for an overload of 20 per cent. The fifth unit is a verticalcross compound engine, capable of developing 1,180 h. p. running at»; r. p. m.
