ABOUT two years ago the bald prairie, 22 milessouth of the Van Buren street station of theIllinois Central, was greatly astonished andpained by an unaesthetic surveyors gang orna-menting its maiden breast with town lot stakes, whereformerly the gopher had its home and the long-leggedgrasshopper spent his happy, brief existence. As if by magic the town grew and builded andextended its borders, and was baptized Harvej, after T.W. Harvey. Factories began to enquire for cheap land,and almost ever\- paper in the land heard of cold-waterHarvev, the manufacturing suburb of Chicago.Printers ink was Hberally used until Harvey to-day hasnearly 4,000 people.

The manufacturing interests include the large BudaFoundry, the Steel Car Works, and the Craver-SteeleManufacturing Compan)^ a large concern making theRandolph Header, rakes, mowers, buggies and lightwagons. The factory emplo3s several hundred men andturns out goods for domestic and foreign consumers.Hon. C. F. Craver is president and A. H. Craver secre-tary and treasurer. The business portion of the town gathers about theUnion depot of the Grand Trunk, C. C. C. &St. L., andIllinois Central railroads, gives the stranger a favorableimpression of the town, while, although scattered, theresidences are modern and pretty. The churches and school interests are well representedby several denominations, and the Harvey Academy,which now occupies a roomy brick structure. Worlds Fair visitors will no doubt be a considerableaddition to Harvey society during the coming year, anda large hotel is under construction to that end. The town is divided by several
